Negative Facts A Blackberry

The BlackBerry smartphone is a helpful device for many reasons. It allows you to browse the Internet, to keep in touch through a variety of means and to play games. But for each strength, there is also a drawback to the phone. As is the case with any electronic device, it's up to you to decide if the positives outweigh the negatives.

BlackBerry Thumb

Often known as "BlackBerry thumb," a sore thumb is often experienced by many BlackBerry users after prolonged use of the device. This type of problem is considered a repetitive strain injury; BlackBerry users make the same movement with their thumb countless times in one day. This type of repetitive strain can lead to tendinitis in the thumb, says a 2008 "U.S. News and World Report" article. Some luxury hotels offer spa services that provide hand treatments geared toward business travelers.

Distracting

Many states have passed laws that prohibit the use of cellphones while driving. If you previously used a standard cellphone behind the wheel, you may have not found it overly distracting. But the myriad functions of a BlackBerry, such as email, instant messaging, Internet use and games, can make the device distracting when you're operating a vehicle.

Addictive

If you've ever been around a BlackBerry user who seems fixated on the device's screen and has trouble putting it down, you may jokingly say he's addicted to his BlackBerry. But he's not the only one. A 2006 study by Rutgers University showed that users can indeed develop addictions to their devices and may eventually require treatment somewhat similar to the treatment provided to drug addicts. The report suggested that employers provide treatment options for "techno addicts" just as they would for employees with a chemical dependency.

Eye Strain

Though the BlackBerry's screen allows you to see clearly the numerous functions you perform, its relatively small screen can lead to undue strain on your eyes, according to a 2006 article in "The Wall Street Journal." With a wide range of functions available on BlackBerry devices, users often spend hours reading e-books or watching videos on their phones. Staring at your device in low light can also make your eyes tired after prolonged use.
