Light it up
Use your resources. As an electrician you likely have access to various lighting systems, power sources and the knowledge to safely use them. If your parade is at night, you are in luck, because your options are limitless. You could outline the trailer using different colored rope lights or stick with a single color. Use flashing or sequential lights on the wheel rims and a bold accent light underneath the trailer to create a fascinating glow. For evening parades, you can never have too many lights, just be sure your lines are straight, the colors do not clash and you do not use strobes.
Power up
Stick with what you know. Use your knowledge to power up your parade float. You can connect power to animated objects, fans, speakers and just about anything you can fit on your float. Creating a living room scene would be fairly easy for an electrician. After getting the skirting to conceal the base and wheels of the trailer, set up a couch, recliner, floor fan, television set and some lights. Live people or animated characters can ride on the float, watching the game or a favorite movie.
Be Creative
Turn a convertible into a light bulb. Using plywood and other light-weight materials, create a frame to conceal the car. The light bulb could be upside down so the bulb part is the car. You can extend the design up and top it with tinfoil to mimic the base. Just be sure to cut out a window or use transparent material so the driver is able to safely navigate the vehicle.
Budget Floats
Do not exceed your budget. If you have limited funds for the float, use your truck, SUV or minivan to pull a borrowed or rented flatbed trailer. Use lots of balloons, plastic wraps, cardboard and cheap plastic/vinyl tablecloths for colorful decorations. Cardboard can be cut and spray painted to look like just about anything, and hay bales are perfect for seating, creating barriers and bases for props.
