Clogs are an important part of Dutch culture
Working on crafts with your children can be an important way of bonding with them. You can also use craft projects to teach your children about other cultures and countries. This may be especially important to parents who have emigrated from their home country and who want their children to be familiar with their heritage. There are many iconic Dutch symbols, including their flag, windmills or tulips, that parents can incorporate into a craft project to teach their children about the Netherlands.
Windmill
Windmills are an ancient part of the Netherlands that people from around the world immediately associate with the country. Use origami to make the windmill blades. You can attach the windmill to a pencil with a brass tack. You can also attach the windmill to an overturned paper cup with a brass tack. Decorate the cup with a door and window. As your children build windmills talk to them about the history if windmills in the Netherlands and explain how wind energy works.
Dutch Hats
Traditional Dutch hats are stiff, white bonnets that completely shade the face. Show your children pictures of Dutch children wearing traditional Dutch clothing. Talk about the symbolism of the clothing and how it originated. Then, make Dutch hats with your children. Simply cut out a piece of rectangular piece of white paper. Overlap two corners at the end of the paper and staple them together. Then place the overlapped portion at the back of the head and staple two strings on the middle of either side of the paper. Tie the hat on the children’s heads.
Tulips
Talk to your children about the tulip industry in the Netherlands. Explain to them how tulips grow and what type of weather is best for tulip growth. Also talk to them about the history of the tulip industry. As you are doing this, have your children paint pictures of tulips with watercolors. If the children are very young, draw tulip outlines for them to color.
Clogs
Clogs are another iconic part of Dutch culture. Talk to your children about the origin of clogs and their importance in Dutch culture and for Dutch peasants. Show them pictures of Dutch children today wearing clogs. These clogs are often painted in bright colors with floral decoration. While you are doing this, have your children paint some premade clogs. You can purchase these clogs at well stocked craft stores.
