Replace bathtub faucet knobs with just a couple screwdrivers.
Many simple plumbing jobs can be completed by the average do-it-yourselfer, if he has the right tools and know-how. Doing basic plumbing on your own provides more than the simple satisfaction of a job well done--it also saves you quite a bit of money, as the average house call from a plumber is $100.00 or more in 2010. Replacing bathtub faucet knobs is just one of those jobs. Whether the old ones are broken, leaking or just out-of-date, replacing them with newer ones is a very straightforward job.
Instructions
1. Cut the water supply to the bathtub by locating and turning off the main shutoff valve. This is usually located in the basement or utility closet. Once off, open the faucets to drain out any remaining water.
2. Pry off the decorative plastic cap from the center of each bathtub knob with the flat edge of a screwdriver. Underneath each will be the knob's set screw. Remove these as well. Now pull the knobs off of the faucet stems, which are the cylindrical structures the knobs fit over.
3. Replace the old washers located directly under each knob with the new ones from the bathtub knob kit. Washers are rubber or plastic donut-shaped insulation pieces that prevent leaks. The old ones will be siting directly under the knobs and can be pried out with the flat edge of a screwdriver. Insert the new ones in the same place.
4. Slide the new knobs over the exposed stems. Secure them with the set screws and insert the decorative cap. Turn the water back on and test the new knobs for any leaks. If the faucet leaks, repeat the previous step to ensure proper fit.
