Professional software can recover some corrupted pictures from hard disks and other external media.
Losing digital pictures is a serious threat to professional photographers and the casual shutterbug alike. Digital pictures are highly vulnerable to degradation and destruction, and it only takes a malfunctioning piece of storage hardware to corrupt digital files. Recovering corrupted pictures requires special software to act on the file. Corrupted digital files are unlike paper files --- they cannot be patched except with precise software applications. These software applications extract the pictures from its parent media. Pictures that are seriously corrupted may never be recovered, or may suffer permanent information loss.
Instructions
1. Attach the media containing the corrupted pictures to the computer, using the necessary adapter cables. Make sure the media is recognized by your operating system by navigating to the media's root folder.
2. Install and launch a file-recovery software. There are a wide variety of software available for free and more-advanced software that cost a fee for recovering digital pictures.
3. Scan the file structure of the media containing the corrupted pictures, using the installed recovery software and saving any recovered pictures on a different media device. When the scan has completed, properly eject the scanned media device.
4. Review any recovered pictures for integrity. If no photos are recovered or the pictures are missing vital information, take the media to a professional for further consultation.
