Replacing your spark plugs can increase the performance of your Mercury Cougar.
Replacing the spark plugs in your 2002 Mercury Cougar can improve the fuel economy and performance of the car. The spark plugs are located on the center of the cylinder heads on top of the engine in your Cougar. They have spark plug wires attached to them that run to the distributor or coil packs. Installing new plugs requires the use of a spark plug socket.
Instructions
1. Open the hood of your Cougar and locate the negative battery cable on the battery. Remove the mounting bolt from the cable end with a wrench and remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Isolate the cable while you are working.
2. Locate the spark plug wire boots on the top of the engine. Select one to start with and remove it from the spark plug, using a twisting motion as you pull it straight off the plug.
3. Remove the spark plug from the head using a spark plug socket, ratchet and extension bar. Turn the ratchet counterclockwise until the spark plug is free of the threads, then lift the socket and plug out of the hole. Discard the old plug.
4. Insert a new spark plug into the spark plug socket and lower it into the hole. Carefully align the plug so that it threads straight into the hole. If there is any resistance, stop. Reset the plug and try again. (Cross threading the holes in the head will result in a very costly repair bill.)
5. Turn the spark plug clockwise with the socket, ratchet and extension until it is snug, then turn it 1/4 turn more. Push the spark plug boot onto the new plug until it snaps in place. Move to the next plug and repeat the process, continuing through all four plugs.
6. Install the negative battery cable on the battery, and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Start the engine to ensure it is running properly.
