Change the Idler Pulley on a 2001 Ranger
The idler pulley on a 2001 Ford Ranger deflects the serpentine belt between two accessory pulleys so that the belt can reach the other pulleys at the proper angle. Along with the tensioner pulley, the idler is the only pulley in the Ranger's serpentine belt system that does not power an accessory or derive its torque from the engine crankshaft. If the bearings in the idler pulley give out, the pulley will either lock up or begin to wobble. In either case, you will have to replace the pulley immediately.
Instructions
1. Open the hood and look for the serpentine belt routing diagram sticker. Factory installers placed the sticker on the fan shroud or underside of the hood. On this sticker, you will find the location of the serpentine belt tensioner and the idler pulley.
2. Move the serpentine belt tensioner off the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tensioner tool. You can purchase one of these low-cost tools at most auto parts stores or professional tool retailers.
3. Slide the belt away from the idler pulley and move the tensioner back into place.
4. Unbolt the idler pulley from the engine with the socket set. A bolt located in the center of the pulley face holds the idler pulley in place. Lift the pulley out of the engine by hand.
5. Hold the new idler pulley in position with one hand while you carefully thread the center bolt into the engine with the other hand. Once you have tightened the bolt as far as you can get it by hand, cinch it down with the socket set.
6. Move the belt tensioner away from the belt once more, slip the belt over the new idler pulley and move the tensioner back into position. Remove the serpentine belt tensioner tool and close the hood.
