Tulle is not just for ballerina skirts and wedding veils.
Tulle is a nylon net material used to make ballet skirts, wedding veils and dresses. It does not absorb water or mold, and it is washable, durable and reusable, making it a practical candidate for a scrubbing pad material, which can be used for everything from dishes to floors.
Instructions
1. Iron the tulle to remove creases. Place a pillowcase on top of the tulle before ironing it to reduce the heat and guard against burning or melting the fabric. Then fold the tulle into fourths.
2. Measure 5-inch sections and mark them with a felt tip pen. There should be a yield of three sections. Move the clothespins as necessary so that each section is clipped with one. Then cut the sections apart with sewing shears. Cutting with sewing shears will give you a cleaner cut.
3. Remove the clothespins holding the three of the portions of tulle together and stack them. Hold them while stacking so they do not unfold. Fold the stack in half horizontally. Place a pillowcase on top of the stack then press it so that the stack will stay in place as folded. Cut across the short ends of the stack that is folded with sewing shears. If the stack does not stay in place use a clothespin to hold it in place.
4. Thread a yarn needle with crochet yarn and stitch along the crease that goes down the middle of the stack. Use a running stitch, which means moving the needle up and down in a vertical movement, making a stitch that is less than 1/2 inch in length each time. Using two clothespins, one on each side of the crease to hold the tulle in place, will make this easier. Remove the clothespins once you have reached the end of the crease. Then remove the yarn from the needle. Pull the yarn to gather the tulle --- pull as hard as you can without undoing your running stitch.
5. Wrap the yarn around the crease you stitched four times as tightly as you can, and tie it off with a double knot. Cut away excess thread with scissors. Do not use the sewing shears; it will dull them. Play with the tulle, pulling each layer apart until it resembles a ball.
