My Sleep Number Bed Keeps Losing Air

The major feature of the Sleep Number bed is the air chamber that allows you to control how soft or firm the bed is. If the air is leaking out, though, you lose this benefit and aren't sleeping as well as you should. Decide whether you should fix the problem or send the mattress back.

Potential Problems

There is a connector hose that fills the mattress with air and controls the firmness of the bed. Your air-loss problem most likely stems from a problem with the hose or its connectors. The other possibility is that there is a problem with the air chamber itself, such as a small leak letting the air out.

Checking the Mattress

When you unzip the cover and remove any foam layers you may have on the bed, you'll find the firmness control hose at the head of the bed. Check this hose by pulling slightly to see if it's properly connected. It may simply snap back into place, solving your problem. If not, remove the hose and examine the area, including the connecting piece attached to the bed and its O-ring for signs of damage or wear and tear. Either of these will cause air loss.

Testing the Mattress

When there's no immediate sign of damage to the bed, you'll have to test the mattress for the source of the problem. Your bed came with two plastic closure caps. If you cannot find them, you can order additional caps from the Sleep Comfort company. Remove the firmness-control hose and use the cap to seal off the connector. As you sleep on the bed, note any air loss. If no air loss occurs, you can attribute the problem to the firmness-control mechanism. If air loss does occur, the problem is with the air chambers.

Sleep Number Warranty

A problem such as air loss is disappointing, especially since you spent so much money on the mattress. Sleep Comfort offers a 20-year limited warranty on the mattress. If you bought the mattress within the past two years, the company will fix the mattress for free. After that, you will be responsible for 20 percent of the cost, plus an additional 4 percent for each year beyond the two-year mark.
