Make A Picture Smaller Than 5 Mb

Reduce the recording size of your digital images by changing the settings in your camera.

Many of today's digital cameras have digital sensors that can create individual digital pictures of 24 MB or more. Having images with this amount of information is good for some applications. But if you need to send your pictures to a newspaper or magazine, they will likely want images that are significantly smaller. You can reduce the size of the image in post-production. However, if you work with this magazine or newspaper regularly, it may be easier and quicker to make the changes within the camera.

Instructions

1. Turn you digital camera on, press the menu button and set the image quality settings to "JPEG" and to the largest setting. Take a test picture.

2. Press the review button and view the image on the rear LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen on the back of the camera. When the image is displayed, press the "Info" button and review the size of the image. Not all cameras have this feature. If your does not, download the image to your computer. Right-click on the image and select properties to view the size of the image.

3. Press the menu button on the back of your, toggle to the image quality settings again and reduce the settings. If you camera produces a 10 MB file at full settings, then reduce the quality settings to the midpoint to obtain a 5 MB file. There are other factors that contribute to the size of the image. If you take a picture of a blue sky, versus a picture of a number of trees, the sky picture will be smaller than the picture containing the trees. This is because there is more information to record when photographing the trees versus the sky.
