What Equipment Is Used For Underwater Photography

Underwater photography produces some of the most unique and beautiful photographs seen throughout the science and nature community. Whether capturing the amazing color or brilliant detail of undersea life, the equipment used in underwater photography is complex, but highly effective.

DSLR Cameras

These are high-quality digital cameras commonly used in professional photography. Along with a strobe and waterproof housing, this makes the ideal underwater photography setup.

Underwater Housing

Everything from DSLR to compact cameras can be used underwater with a special waterproof housing, which typically provide access to most of the functions of the camera.

Strobes and Lighting

Underwater strobes are more commonly used for lighting in professional underwater photography. They tend to bring out the brilliant colors of undersea life and wash away the dull haziness found in some point-and-shoot pictures.

Waterproof Camera

Waterproof cameras are often the same as a point-and-shoot with its own housing. They are commonly sold as disposables, which prevents having to deal with the housing.

Point-and-Shoot Camera

Point-and-shoot cameras may also be used with an underwater camera housing. Although the quality may not measure up to a DSLR camera, they are an affordable alternative.
