Relieve Sinus Pressure When Pregnant

Sinus pressure can be incredibly painful. It occurs when the sinus cavities are swollen, obstructed or filled with mucus. While there are plenty of sinus medications on the market, not all are appropriate for pregnant women. If you are pregnant, you need to take special consideration when it comes to the treatments you employ to relieve sinus pressure. Thankfully, there are several options available to you.

Instructions

1. Take a hot shower. The steam from the hot water will help to thin mucus and drain your sinus cavities. You can also take a hot bath; however, the water temperature should not be higher than 100 degrees F. Temperatures higher than that could be harmful to your baby.

2. Ask your doctor about over-the-counter sinus medications. Generally, acetaminophen, also known as Tylenol, is safe to take while pregnant, since it does not cross into the placenta. Do not take any medication without first consulting your doctor.

3. Place a warm compress on your sinus cavities. Soak a washcloth in warm water and lay it across your eyes and nose. Let it remain there for five to 10 minutes. If pain persists, reapply.

4. Drink water. Dehydration greatly worsens sinus pressure. Consuming water will also help to thin mucus secretions and clear toxins from your body. Drink at least 64 oz. daily. Other clear liquidsm such as juices and broths, will also help to hydrate you.

5. Massage your sinus cavities. Use firm, steady pressure to rub your fingers down your forehead, nose and underneath your eyes. This will help to drain the areas and reduce pain.

6. Use a humidifier. A humidifier will moisten the air, helping to loosen mucus and relieve sinus pressure. Place one next to your bed and you'll breathe easier while sleeping.

7. Fill a bowl with boiling water. Add two to three drops of lavender essential oil. Place a towel over your head and breathe in the steam for approximately 10 minutes. The steam will help drain your sinuses and relieve pressure. The lavender oil contains soothing properties and helps to relieve pain.
