Make A Beach Vacation Shadowbox

Shadowboxes are a great way to bring vacation pictures to life and preserve the excitement that you felt during your beach vacation. Even better, they are a practical, decorative way to use the shells and other potentially clutter-creating souvenirs that you brought back with you like sand, fish-festooned shot glasses and sharks' tooth necklaces. Making a beach vacation shadowbox is a way to keep the fun that you had at the beach present in your mind and a little bit of your vacation with you all year long.

Instructions

1. Lay out the pictures that you want to use as background on top of the shadowbox backing. You can slant them artistically so that they form a fan in the background or line them up to completely cover the back of the box. You may wish to use pictures of yourself and your family or prefer scenic views to remind you of the seascape.

2. Glue the pictures in place. Use a fair amount of glue around the edges of the photos to insure that they do not peel or curl over time.

3. Glue a layer of sand to the bottom of the shadow box. Use the glue stick to spread a layer of glue across the bottom, then sprinkle sand over it and knock out the excess grains. If you want to have piles of sand to make it look more like the beach, then keep the excess sand to sprinkle around the three-dimensional items later.

4. Glue down your three-dimensional components. Use the hot glue gun for this step to insure that the articles do not move. You may glue a pile of shells in the corner or spread them out around other souvenirs. Make sure that they do not obscure any important aspects of the background photos before you glue them into place.

5. Let the glue dry. Give your shadowbox at least thirty minutes before attaching the back to the frame. This will insure that everything is secure and dry.

6. Attach the back of the shadowbox to the glass-encased front. You can hang your shadowbox on the wall of your home or office to remind you of good times on your beach vacation.

Tips Warnings

You can use a series of similarly shaped, different colored shadowboxes to highlight shell collections or other themed items in a group of shadowboxes.

Keep your shadowbox relatively simple so that it can be enjoyed as art as well as for the memories.

If you plan on using any shells that you picked up on the beach for your shadowbox, make sure that you bleach them first to insure that they do not begin to smell.
