Set Up A Multiple Line Answering Machine

Multiple line answering machines are manufactured to answer incoming calls from more than one telephone line. These answering machines are more affordable alternatives to voicemail or answering services for small businesses and home offices. Most multiple line answering machines are equipped to handle two telephone lines. You can also find multiple line answering machines incorporated into the multiple line phones.

Instructions

1. Locate the L1 and L2 jacks at the bottom of the phone base. You may have to slide the base of the integrated phone system off to see the jacks.

2. Locate the telephone line cords that came with your machine. Insert one end of the cord with blue connectors into the L1 jack and one end of the cord with transparent connectors into the L2 jack.

3. Plug the free end of the blue telephone cord into the wall jack labeled "L1." Then plug the other end of the transparent telephone cord into the wall jack labeled "L2."

4. Plug the unit into an electrical outlet and wait for it to initialize.

5. Check for the proper connection. Pick your phone up, press "line 1" then "line 2" and listen for the dial tone on each line. Continue testing the lines by dialing the telephone number for line 1 on line 2 and vice versa.

6. Configure the line selection. The multiple line answering machine is preset to answer whichever line is ringing when it picks up. You can set the system to pick up one line only. The system is usually preset to pick up Line 1.

7. Configure the mailboxes. Your two line answering machine will have four mailboxes. Mailbox 1 will save messages that came in on line 1 while mailbox 2 will save messages for line 2. You can set mailboxes 3 and 4 to be accessible to callers from line 1 and line 2.

8. Select your announcement options. You can record four messages which callers can hear on either line 1 or 2. The answering machine can be set up so that each line can have a unique message, both lines can have the same message or each mailbox can have a different message.
