My Car Player Won'T Play Mp3 Disks

Some car stereos can play MP3 CDs.

Some models of in-car stereos can read data CDs containing MP3 files as well as standard music CDs. The biggest advantage of this is that MP3 CDs can hold many more tracks than standard CDs, allowing the user to store much more on a single disk. If your stereo stops playing MP3 CDs you can run through some troubleshooting steps to try and fix or identify the problem. You should allow approximately 10 minutes to complete this.

Instructions

1. Check the basics first. Make sure the stereo is set to CD mode and the volume is turned up. Some stereos have a "Mute" function. Make sure this is not on.

2. Make sure the CD player is compatible with MP3 CDs. Check the manual of your car CD player to confirm the features. Some car stereos are only compatible with particular types of data CD.

3. Insert a standard store-bought CD into the stereo. If the stereo plays the CD, this rules out problems with the stereo connections and the CD player itself. Re-write the CD on your computer, making sure all the files are in the MP3 format, and try it in the CD player.

4. Switch the stereo to radio mode. If sound comes from the speakers it may be a problem with the CD player part of the stereo. Consider purchasing a CD lens cleaner disk to remove dirt or dust from the lens. These disks have small brushes on the shiny side of the CD for cleaning the lens. A dirty lens can prevent the stereo from reading CDs of any type.

5. Remove the stereo from the dashboard using a C-shaped stereo removal tool by removing any plastic trim around your stereo and look for four holes, two either side, for the tool tools to clip into. Once clipped in the tools provide grip for pulling out the stereo. Holding tightly, pull the stereo outward until you have a good view of the connections. Check to see that the connections at the back of the stereo are firmly in place and slide the stereo back into the dashboard.
