Problems With Canon Powershot A95

The A95 features a flip-out monitor.

The ability to troubleshoot a Canon PowerShot A95 5-megapixel digital camera while in the field could mean the difference between a good and bad picture. The A95 features several shooting modes, which include "Macro Mode," "Movie Mode," "Portrait," "Landscape," "Night Scene," "Fast Shutter" and "Slow Shutter." The PowerShot also includes a panoramic image-capture and a self-timer function for self-portraits. Problems with power loss and dark or bright pictures are remedied with setting adjustments and basic maintenance.

Camera Won't Power On

If the A95 fails to turn on, confirm that the memory card cover is securely closed. Turn the camera over, open the battery cover and remove the batteries to reset the camera. Inspect the metal battery terminals inside the chamber for grime or blockage. If the contacts are dirty, clean them with a soft cloth. Reinsert new AA alkaline or NiMH batteries into the chamber in compliance with the polar indicators on the inside of the chamber.

Camera Won't Record

If the PowerShot has power but won't snap a picture, confirm that the mode switch is set to "Shooting" instead of "Playback." The camera is unable to take a picture in "Playback" mode. If you're taking pictures using the flash, allow the flash time to recharge before snapping the next image. If the memory card is full, replace it with a blank memory card or delete pictures from the current memory card to free up some space.

Subject Is Too Dark

If captured images feature a dark subject, turn the fill-flash on, if the flash doesn't turn on automatically. Press the "Flash" button to cycle through the different flash modes. The fill-flash is a constant flash, which means it fires every time a picture is taken, regardless of the lighting situation. Fill-flash mode is represented by a single lighting bolt icon. Confirm that the subject stands within 14 feet of the camera.

Subject Is Too Bright

If the subject appears too bright in A95 captured images, she might be standing too close to the flash. Ensure that the subject stands at least 1.5 feet away from the camera. If the light is bouncing off the subject and into the camera lens, readjust the angle of the camera, until it's out of the way of the light. If the fill-flash is set to "On," push the "Flash" button, until the flash is "Off."
