Jailbreaking an iPhone 3G allows users to download otherwise restricted software from providers such as Installous and Cydia, which offer games and other unique tweaks to enhance the iPhone experience. Jailbreaking gets around other iPhone restrictions, as well. There are some down sides to jailbreaking, such as interfering with the original programming and violating Apple's warranty terms, but the process is fairly simple.
Instructions
1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable that came with the device. If your iPhone isn't updated to the 3.0 software, do so by connecting to iTunes.
2. Download the 3.0 firmware if you haven't already and then download RedsnOw by the iPhone Dev Team, a group that provides tools to jailbreak iPhones. Extract the RedsnOw file.
3. Power your iPhone device off while making sure its connected to the computer. Hold down the home and power button. Release the power button and hold down the home button for 30 seconds. Your iPhone should come to a screen that says "Downloading Jailbreak Data." This also works with the iPod touch and iPod second generation.
4. Click "Finish" on RedsnOw. A pineapple should appear on your iPhone screen as it continues to jailbreak you iPhone 3G. After the status bar is full, it will reboot your iPhone and an apple logo will appear on the screen.
5. Check to see if Cydia is installed on your iPhone. If it has been installed, your iPhone has been jailbroken successfully.
