Download pictures from a digital camera to a computer for viewing or storage.
Photography with digital cameras enables both novice and amateur photographers to take digital photos while saving them onto memory storage inside the camera. The size of your memory storage dictates how many photos you can take before you fill it up. Free your memory storage for additional new photographs when you download pictures from a digital camera to a computer. While special software may come with your camera, usually your computer will recognize your digital camera when you connect it, making the software unnecessary.
Instructions
1. Turn your camera off and connect your camera to your computer using the USB cable that came with the camera. Insert one end of the USB cable into the camera and the other end into a USB port of your computer. Turn your camera on. A second way to access your saved photos is to remove the memory stick from your digital camera and insert it into the memory stick port of your computer.
2. Wait for your computer to detect either the USB connection or the memory stick. Vista and Windows 7 users will see an option to enter a tag that will help identify the group of photos. Enter a tag or proceed through this step by clicking "Import."
3. Choose to copy the files from your camera or memory stick to your computer manually or just use the import wizard. If you choose to copy the photos manually, right-click on the photo folder and select "Copy." Select the storage location of your choice and right-click again, this time selecting "Paste." Select the storage location for the photos to use the import wizard--usually the "My Pictures" folder is the default location. If you desire a different location, make a folder somewhere else, name it and designate this location for the new photos.
4. Wait while the photos upload to your location. If you want to delete the photos from the camera or the memory stick, place a check in the appropriate box to delete the photos after you import them.
5. Right-click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon from your taskbar (lower right corner of the desktop) and highlight your camera. Click "Safely Remove Hardware" and wait for the message telling you to remove the hardware. If you used a memory stick, remove it by pushing it in gently until it clicks and then pulling it out slowly.
