If you're like many people, you take your laptop with you most places and can get on the Internet in seconds with a wireless USB flash card that allows for broadband Internet access from almost anywhere. The iCON 322 USB modem also is equipped to handle GPS interface. This means that during its course of duty, it can retrieve satellite data for the use on Google Maps, MapQuest or some other online navigation system, obviating the need for you to buy a GPS device.
Instructions
1. Get your iCON 322 on the company's GlobeTrotter firmware. This is a requirement of activating the 322's GPS interface. Plug your iCON 322 into an available USB port on your computer, then navigate to the first link in the Resources section. Click the GlobeTrotter firmware for your laptop's operating system. Choose "Save File" and place the installation file in a convenient location. Double-click it once it's downloaded, then choose "Run." Follow the prompts to install the latest GlobeTrotter operating system on your 322.
2. Reboot your computer. Navigate to your laptop's Device Manager and scroll down to find your 322 modem. Press the expansion button next to the listing and scroll down again to find the GlobeTrotter firmware. Make sure there is a "GPS Interface" listed. If the interface isn't enabled, initiate an applications interface on your Device Manager's Hyper Terminal. Type "AT_OIFC?" (no quotes) to bring up the 322's application. The response should be "_OIFC : w,x,y,z". Type "AT_OIFC=w,x,y,2" to turn the GPS interface on.
3. Unplug your iCON 322 from the computer to reboot it. Reboot your computer too.
4. Plug your 322 back into your computer once it's powered back on.
5. Try using an online navigation system. The data received from your 322 will supply the program with satellite information on your location and direction of travel, increasing its ability to navigate your travels.
