There are two issues you want to address with your home--security and electric efficiency. Here is a simple procedure to address both issues at the same time by installing a wall-mounted motion sensor light with a timer to the outside of your home.
Instructions
1. Make a trip to the local hardware or home improvement store to pick up the lighting kit. You will want the one with the timer to save on electricity.
2. Bring the lighting kit home and gather up the rest of the list of things you need so that you won't have to waste time hunting for something later.
3. Find the breaker box for the electric service. Shut off the power to the outside lights.
4. Unscrew the lightbulb in the old lighting fixture and put aside. Next, unscrew the bolts or screws holding the old lighting fixture to the house.
5. Loosen the light fixture from the building (because of the glue backing that held the fixture in place). Use the knife or the flathead screwdriver to do this.
6. Using the wire cutters, cut the wiring from the house to the fixture as close to the fixture as possible. Only cut the end near the fixture. You will be using the wiring to wire the motion light.
7. Unpack the lighting kit from the box, making sure everything is included.
8. Using a damp cloth and the butter knife, remove any leftover glue or dirt remaining from the old fixture. Try to make the surface as clean as possible so that the new backing ring can create a tight seal.
9. Follow the kit instructions for attaching the unit to the house. They are pretty straight forward and easy to understand.
10. After you have the wiring connected to the new fixture, tuck the wires into the back of it and attach the fixture to the house. Make sure the fixture is snug against the siding.
11. Screw in the lightbulb and turn the power back on at the breaker box.
12. Check to make sure everything functions properly. After you have the light turning on and off, set the timer to the desired time.
