Cutting marble countertops

Cutting Marble Countertops

I am remodeling my kitchen. I have long marble countertops that need to be cut in order to fit into the new layout. I've called around a few places and can't get anyone to excited to come out and do the job. Looking for advice on proceed or how someone else solved a similar problem. I've got a grinder and thought about cutting them with my team but it's not the kind of thing you want to screw up. I live in Chicago and can keep calling places until I find someone but I'm running out of time The grinder would work with a diamond blade, but it's difficult to guide it precisely enough to get a good accurate cut. If you have a circular saw, it would be much easier to guide it with a straightedge clamped to the top, offset by the distance from blade to platen edge. Diamond blades are available at fairly low cost at GranQuartz or Braxton Bragg. The top needs to be supported on both sides of the cut (actually end to end) so it doesn't break before the cut is finished. Make sure the saw is connected to a GFIC outlet and run water into the cut around the blade to keep the dust from flying. It would work best to have a helper to run the water and help steady the piece as you cut. Marble is soft, so be sure to protect the top with tape or a piece of laminate for the saw to run on so you don't scratch the marble with the saw platen. Good luck Most home improvement stores carry a 4 handheld wet saw (made by Superior for example) that could make this cut for you, clean and neat, just like a professional. If your handy and follow the precautions / instructions CNTRTOP explained, you could accomplish this. Take your time and think it through, you only get one shot at this! I think we can do it. Thanks for the help. Slow and steady. Not nearly the problem I thought it was going to be. We used a handheld grinder and a steady hand. Cut smoothly without much dust (we sprayed water as we went). Turned out real nice. Thanks
