Create Freelance Contractor Invoice

No matter how experienced you are in your particular field, when you're freelancing you want everything to look professional. One of the first things you'll want to do is create a freelance contractor invoice. This is your formal bill for services. There are certain elements that must be present for it to be a legal document.

Instructions

1. Decide on an invoice template. Design your own or use one from Microsoft's template page or another web site. The simpler the better, but be sure all the essentials are included at the top, such as date of invoice, your company name, address, phone number, email address and your invoice number.

2. The next portion of the invoice should contain a space for date(s) and a description of the service conducted on that date. On a separate line, designate the amount charged for that service, per your previous agreement with the employer for hourly (or per project) contract wages. Each separate date should have its own section.

3. Remember all those times you drove to the center to pick up new software? Or the times you had to buy postage to mail out forms required by your gig? Those are expenses and if you and the company for whom you're working contract previously agreed you'd be reimbursed for miscellaneous expenses, you'll want a separate section for expenses, each dated like the services section discussed above.

4. Total the services and expenses and place that figure at the bottom of your invoice as Total Amount Due for Month (or Week.) Add a sentence at the very bottom of the page that says, Thank you for your business.

5. Provide the company with a due date for your invoice, unless they already have established a payment cycle. Remember, if you previously signed a contract with the company, you agreed to their payment arrangements.

Tips Warnings

Always have a signed independent contractor agreement with everyone who uses your freelance services, including family or friends.
