Multiple Methods
Three different remote methods can be used when trying to program DirecTV and other electronics. If you have all of the remote codes for the processes, adding them is quite easy. If you do not, the process may take a little longer. The first thing to do is make sure that you are using a standard DirecTV remote. The remote is white on the front and black on the back. It features a mix of grey and colored buttons. The remote is the same for any type of DirecTV receiver box.
Program TV Mode
Use the Program TV mode. This mode allows you to program the DirecTV remote to control your television functions. In most cases, the DirecTV remote will automatically find your TV, but this manual methods works just as well. Press and hold the "SELECT" and "MUTE" buttons on the remote until the light flashes. Type in the code for the television and wait for the light to flash. Press the "POWER" button on the remote and see if the television has turned off.
AV Functions
Repeat the program process for any other devices, but make sure that the AV1 or AV2 functions are set for them. If the process does not work, you may have the wrong remote codes for the device. Check DirecTV's official website for a listing of up-to-date remote codes. Make sure that the device is turned on when programming the remote codes. If it is turned off, the remote cannot find the device to program the settings.
Powering Devices
Keep one device on at a time, so the remote codes do not interfere with each other. For example, turn the television off when programming the VCR and the VCR off when programming a DVD player.
Manual Method
Use the manual code method. Press and hold the "SELECT" and "MUTE" buttons until the light goes on. Press the numbers "9-1-1" on your remote and fourth number depending on the device. Press "0" for a satellite, "1" for a TV, "2" for a DVD/VCR, and "3" for a surround sound system. Press the "Channel Up" button repeatedly until the device turns off. Once it turns off, press the "Select" button to set the remote code.
