Use A Sony Ilink Cable

Use a Sony iLink Cable

The Sony iLink cable is a firewire cable that connects portable external hard drives to computers. The firewire cable provides a faster data transfer than standard USB 2.0 cables, however, the computer you are using must have a firewire port for you to use the cable. When you purchase a Sony external hard drive, the drive is going to be prepackaged with the Sony iLink cable.

Instructions

1. Plug the power cable into the back of the external hard drive. Insert the other end of the cable into a power outlet nearby.

2. Flip on the power switch to the external hard drive, if there is one on the device. Many external hard drives power on once they have been connected to a computer.

3. Plug the Sony iLink cable into the firewire port on the back side of the external hard drive.

4. Connect the other end of the firewire cable to the firewire port on the computer. In a moment, the computer will state that it has detected a new external hard drive. If you are using a Windows computer, you need to open "Computer" (or "My Computer") to find the hard drive icon. If you are using a Mac, the icon is going to appear directly on the desktop.
