Making Small Speakers Sound Big

Making Small Speakers Sound Big

Acoustics

Small speakers don't have to sound small if you take some effort into preparing your room to get the most out of them. Acoustics is the study of how sound propagates through space. When sound is emitted through a speaker, the waves interact with everything in the room to produce the pleasant sounds going through your ears.

Treating Your Room

The larger and more cluttered the room, the lower that the sound quality coming through the system will be. Furnishings like heavily cushioned couches and thick curtains will muffle the sound coming through your speakers a great deal. Oddly shaped rooms will also have strange acoustics, as sound can bounce off of the walls at odd angles.

Speaker Placement

Try to place the speakers between 1.5 to 3 feet away from the wall that they are closest to. Placing your small speakers too close to the wall results in the bass getting overwhelmed. Shift the speakers so that they are facing toward the people listening. This increases the amount of direct sound hitting the listener and thereby improves the listening experience.
