Digital cameras are susceptible to human error in ways older cameras are not. It is possible for an individual to accidentally delete a picture from a memory card. When this happens, it does not mean that the picture cannot be retrieved, but a certain process must be followed to attempt to get the picture back. New forms of software have assisted in the picture retrieval process, but it is not guaranteed that the lost picture will be located.
Instructions
1. Remove the memory card from the digital camera as soon as you realize that a photograph has been deleted accidentally. Leave the memory card out of the camera until the photo retrieval process begins. The Disk Doctors website explains that the photo is usually still on the memory card, although accessing it requires some work.
2. Determine how the image was lost to begin the retrieval process. The Disk Doctors website explains that photos can be erased on a memory card because of a button being pushed, an error in the memory card or a hard drive issue. The memory space with the information is still in the memory card as long as it has not been overwritten with more information.
3. Place the memory card back into the digital camera. Hook the camera up to the computer using the USB cable. Turn the camera on and wait for the computer to read the memory card and display options for viewing the files that are saved on the memory card.
4. Open a file on the computer to see if the lost picture is still viewable. If the picture cannot be read by the computer, the individual will need to research and download a software recovery program. There are recovery programs (such as Smart Recovery, PC Inspector and Recuva) that can be downloaded online for free.
5. Locate a software retrieval program and download it onto the computer. The Software Patch website is an example of a website that offers a free download of the Smart Recovery software. Make sure that the memory card is still in the camera and connected to the computer.
6. Open the software recovery program and select the drive where the digital camera memory is stored before beginning the data scanning process. The Disk Doctors website explains that the scan will locate lost data and move it to a designated folder on the computer. Once the scan is complete, the individual can open the folder and see if the picture was located.
