Photograph Insects & Macro Photography

Use a tripod and remote release when doing macro photography.

The world of macro and insect photography is a fascinating one for any photographer who has ventured into it. Macro photography is the genre of photography involved in taking pictures using extreme magnification. This type of photography requires lenses and close-up filters designed for macro photography. A sturdy tripod and remote release are also used in macro photography.

Instructions

1. Attach your camera to a sturdy tripod and position the tripod above the insect or other subject that you want to photograph. Attach the cable or remote release to your camera and turn the camera on.

2. Turn the exposure mode dial to "Aperture Priority" or "Manual" mode. You will want to have control over the aperture to ensure you have a good depth of field (the portion of the scene that is in focus). Set the aperture by turning the input dial on the camera until you reach an aperture of f8.

3. Adjust the tripod and camera until you have composed the picture to your liking. Press the "Menu" button on the back of your camera and select the "Custom function" mode in your menu. Depending on the type of camera you are using, you may not have this feature. If you do, you want to enable "Mirror lock-up." This applies to single-lens-reflex cameras, and it locks the mirror up into the shooting position moments before the shutter fires. This minimizes camera shake caused by the mirror moving during exposure.

4. Press the shutter release halfway down to engage the metering and autofocus systems. When you are satisfied with the composition and have the exposure set, use the remote release to take the picture.

5. Review the picture on camera's LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen, make any adjustments to the exposure or focus, and take more pictures.
