The lens of your eye focuses and refracts light so that it will appear on your retina. The lens is positioned behind the clear outer cornea and the colored iris. The ciliary muscles open and close the lens.








Function of the Lens


The lens of your eye focuses light, which bends when it enters the medium of the lens material. This bending of light is called refraction, and parallel lines of light can be focused on the retina with a convex lens. The lens is controlled by the ciliary ligaments and muscles to focus the incoming light, which passes from the retina to the optic nerve.


Nearsighted or Farsighted Lens


Your eye has two sets of lenses; the cornea that is the clear visible lens at the front, and the adjustable lens behind the cornea that is called the crystalline lens. If you see objects easily at a distance, you are farsighted. If you see objects easily close up, you are nearsighted. The lens in your eye will adjust to focus on objects at a distance or close-up.








Crystalline Lens


The lens behind the cornea is called the crystalline lens and helps you fine tune your vision. When the lens flattens to see a distant object this is called accommodation, and the lens becomes less convex. The crystalline lens will bend to become more convex for near vision. The ciliary muscles control the lens, which is attached to ligaments.
