Troubleshoot A Nikon Fe2

The durable features make Nikon FE-2's popular long after they have been discontinued.

The Nikon FE-2 camera body is a durable single lens reflex camera released by Nikon in 1983. The metal body, easy controls and lens compatibility are all reasons why this camera body has held its market value for over 25 years. When problems arise with an FE-2 camera body, there are a few simple steps which can be followed before taking the unit in to a certified Nikon repair facility.

Instructions

1. Check the batteries. The Nikon FE-2 has some electronic controls which are powered by two S76 silver oxide or L44 alkaline-manganese batteries. Improper batteries, or batteries which are incorrectly installed, will impair the camera's functions. Turn the camera body upside down and use a coin to turn the battery compartment counterclockwise to remove the battery compartment.

2. Clean the battery contacts. Use a soft, clean cloth to remove light oxidization and deposits. Rub heavier deposits with a clean pencil eraser to remove them. Clean the interior of the battery compartment and the outside battery clip.

3. Install two fresh batteries in the battery clip, then reinsert the battery clip and use a coin to turn the clip clockwise until it is secured. Turn the camera on by moving the film winding arm out away from the dial and see if this solves the issue.

4. Check to make sure the film is properly installed. Finish any film in the camera, then turn the camera upside down and press the silver button to disengage the film. Flip up the winding lever on the top left side of the camera body and wind the film completely. Open the camera back by pulling upwards on the lever causing the back to pop open. Insert a fresh roll of 35mm film into the left hand chamber, then stretch the film across the shutter, aligning the holes on the film to the sprockets on the take-up reel. Insert the end of the film into the take-up reel and then press the shutter button, then use the winder arm to wind the film. The properly loaded film should move smoothly onto the take-up reel.

5. Take the camera to a certified Nikon repair center for any other issues. Attempting to resolve more than these basic issues by yourself can damage the camera body.
