Use Garbage Bags Creatively While Camping

Garbage bags may be one of the world's greatest inventions for their versatility and usability. Strong, waterproof and portable, garbage bags should be an essential part of any camper's gear. So, the next time you are filling your back pack for a hiking adventure or preparing your car for a family outing, throw in a box of sturdy garbage bags.

Instructions

1. Waterproof just about anything with a garbage bag. You can cut holes in garbage bags to create emergency ponchos, tie them around your feet and even wrap your hat in the sturdy plastic to keep both warm and dry. If it looks like it might rain overnight, cover your campfire, food and camping furniture with a few garbage bags to keep them clean and dry. If you happen to get wet, store your wet clothes in a garbage bag to keep them separate from your clean, dry clothing.

2. Fill a garbage bag with snow if you need water for cooking and drinking. It takes a lot of snow to make enough water to fill a cook pot or water bottles, but a garbage bag can hold more than enough. Perfect in emergencies, a garbage bag full of snow can save your life, or at least your dinner.

3. Insulate your tent while camping for cozy warm nights. Place a layer of garbage bags underneath your tent for insulation and to stop ground moisture from entering through your tent. You can also slip a garbage bag over the bottom of your sleeping bag to keep your feet warm at night.

4. Use garbage bags when fishing to reduce mess and odor. Place the fish you have caught into a garbage bag until you are ready to clean them. Place the heads, tails, scales and other fish parts into the bag while cleaning, then tie a knot in the bag and dispose of it with your other garbage. Keeping fish and fish parts in a garbage bag will limit mess and odor and will prevent animals and pests from entering your campsite for a tasty treat.

5. Leave your campsite cleaner than you left it by filling garbage bags with any litter or trash you find around the area. Whether it was there when you got there, keeping nature clean and green is an important practice for any camper.
