Home Theater Project Ideas

Living rooms are slowly being replaced by home theaters. A home theater is the entertainment center of the house, where movies and TV shows are watched, video games are played and sports can be enjoyed on a big screen. Home theaters vary in size and function, but there are several strategies you can implement when creating one of your own. These ideas can be mixed together, combined with other ideas or used to create a new idea that will become the perfect home theater for your lifestyle.

Movie Theme

A classic home theater design is the "movie theme." Instead of tacking a few posters on the wall, use a matte and frame them. This will add more style and sophistication to the room. Alternate movie posters every couple of months to keep the room fresh. Visit small movie stores or chains to access free movie posters and advertisements that can be used within the room. Complete the room with other film décor such as movie props, for example, a stand with movie-related action figures or a replica Darth Vader helmet.

Theater Style

Design the home theater to look like a classic movie theater. Hang dark red curtains on both sides of the screen. Add décor such as film reels along the walls. Include small lights along the walkway. Store DVDs and other media behind the red curtains. Close the curtains when the TV is not in use. Purchase a classic popcorn machine to have that true movie-theater smell.

Projection Screen

Consider a projection-screen TV. Projection TVs will provide the biggest picture and installation is simple. This can help make the at-home movie experience feel more like being at the theatre. If a projection screen TV is too expensive, purchase a flat-panel TV to save space in the home theater. Cabinets built directly into the walls can hold electronics and leave plenty of floor space for chairs, couches and even bean bags.

Home Arcade

Make the home theater a multimedia room. Hook up video-game systems to the TV for playing and add more arcade elements to the room. Purchase a used pinball machine that can be a great piece of memorabilia and an activity for the room. Other arcade cabinets are available as well and would make a great addition to the room. Hook up multiple TVs for large-scale multiplayer arcade games.

Wireless

Make everything easier by purchasing wireless equipment. A universal wireless remote will keep everything organized and can even be programmed to control the lights, blinds and any piece of electronic equipment. Wireless video-game controllers allow players to play in any part of the room. A wireless surround-sound system will make it easy to maneuver speakers and set up the sound system.
