Create A Home Theater Floor Plan

Home theaters need a certain amount of planning in order for you to get the full audio and visual experience. Seating should be adjusted for the best viewing angle and speakers need to be set up and tailored to the room for the ideal listening experience. You can save time setting up your system if you create a home theater floor plan first.

Instructions

Create a Home Theater Floor Plan

1. Measure the dimensions of the room you're using for your home theater. Use a ruler and pencil to sketch out the room on a piece of paper. It may be helpful to use a scale for your drawing (like 2 inches equals 1 foot) to get an idea of what will fit where.

2. Pick a spot on the floor plan to set up the television. Remember that sunlight coming in from the windows can be a big distraction if you don't have good shades in the room. If sunlight is unavoidable, it's almost always preferable to have the sun on your back than to have it in your eyes, although this can cause a glare on the TV during the day.

3. Draw your couch into the floor plan so that it's directly in front of the television. The distance from the TV will depend on how large your TV is , but as a rule, you should divide your TV size by four to find out the optimal viewing distance in feet. For example, a 32-inch TV should sit 8 feet away from the couch.

4. Experiment with different placements for additional chairs, couches or tables. You're using pencil so you can make changes to the floor plan on the same piece of paper. Remember, if your floor plan isn't to scale you'll need to consider leaving room for people to move around.

5. Investigate possible speaker locations. You'll probably want to have speakers in the front corners of the room that are angled so they face towards the center of the couch. This setup provides a balanced stereo image and audio output.

6. Plan to install other speakers (such as the subwoofer) in the back corners of your room. These speakers help provide surround sound and should be angled so they disperse sound straight across the back wall. You may need to create space on your home theater plan for the subwoofers if they are going to be installed in any location other than next to the TV.
