Hook Up An 8mm Camcorder To A Computer

Connect an 8mm camcorder to a computer to transfer videotape to PC.

An 8mm camcorder records video on a tape about the same size as an audio cassette. Getting the analog footage into the digital domain of a computer requires either a converter box to connect the camera and the PC, or a video capture card installed in the PC. You can use a standard set of audio/video cables with either connection. You will also need a USB cable if using a converter box.

Instructions

Direct Connection From Camcorder to Computer

1. Connect the yellow, red and white cables on one end of the AV cables to the color-coded AV output jacks on the camcorder, typically located on the back edge or side. If the camcorder only records in mono, connect the white plug to the audio jack, the yellow plug to the video jack, and leave the red plug to dangle.

2. Insert the yellow plug in the computer's video capture card jack, located on the back of the tower.

3. Insert the white and red plugs on the other end of the AV cables into the Y-adapter, then insert the mini-plug on the Y-adapter into the computer's "Line In" audio jack on the back of the tower.

4. Connect the yellow, red and white cables on one end of the AV cables to the color-coded AV output jacks on the camcorder, typically located on the side or back panel. If the camcorder only records in mono, connect the white plug to the audio jack, the yellow plug to the video jack, and leave the red plug to dangle.

5. Plug the other ends of the composite cable into the color-matching AV input jacks on the converter box.

6. Connect a USB cable from the port on the converter box to any available USB port on the PC.
