Post Hole Digger or Hand Auger
I don't know if this has been asked before (having trouble with the forums search), but I was just wondering how useful people find those clamp style post hole diggers, and how they compare to T top hand augers. Is there anything specific to watch out for in either. What about the so called Iwan pattern hand augers? Thanks in advance Cheers, Gibber It all depends on the soil that you are trying to punch the hole in!! In the clay I have to deal with, the clam shells are the only manual diggers that work -- the auger is a waste of time. My Father-in-Law (western WA, in it's sandy loam) swore by the auger -- the clam shells didn't do squat for him!! I laid out approximately 60 ft of picket fence late last fall, with steel posts, secured in concrete, which was mixed poured into sonotubes. The steel posts are 7 ft above ground are set in concrete to the depth of 3 ft. For digging the holes, I, first tried to rent one of those gasoline powered digging augers, but I was advised by all the local rental companies that the ground around here has such a high rock or large stone content, that it is too dangerous to rent them out, so they don't carry them. What finally worked for me was a combination of a heavy duty digging bar and a modified clamshell type digger. It's brutal work, requiring lotsa patience perseverence. I am presently beginning to finish the additional 120 ft of fence in order to complete the job. The yard isn't gonna run away anytime soon, so, I'm gonna keep plugging away at it.
