Get Rid of Black Mold in the Basement
Black mold can creep in wherever there is a steady supply of moisture. You may not even know it is there until you have unexplainable health issues. Black mold can go undetected in seldom-used basements until it has nearly taken over. Inspect dark, damp areas of your home often. If you find black mold growing, you need to remove it quickly and safely.
Instructions
1. Run a de-humidifier to remove as much moisture from the area as possible. Place an exhaust fan in the window to blow the moisture outside. This will also keep the airborne mold from entering your home.
2. Inspect all of the surfaces in the basement and determine where the mold is located. It will look like black dirt or soot stains. Do not touch the black mold with your bare hands. Wear a mask over your face to avoid breathing it in.
3. Decide whether this is a job you can efficiently tackle. If it is too large a job or you are physically unable to do the work, you may need to hire a professional cleaning service. If you can safely remove the mold yourself, you must be cautious and quick.
4. Wet the black mold if it appears to be dried out. This will stop the dry dust particles from being released in the air when you disturb it. Just use a spray bottle and apply a fine mist of water onto the moldy surface.
5. Scrub the moldy surface with hot, soapy water. Follow this up by rinsing the surface with a solution of strong bleach water. Use 25 percent bleach to #xBE; water and wear rubber gloves at all times. Dispose of the rags you use by sealing them in a plastic bag. Don't try to wash and reuse them.
6. Place any moldy clothing or damaged materials into plastic bags, seal them and remove them from the basement area. Do not take them through the living part of your home if you can avoid it. Mold spores can spread very easily, and you may contaminate other parts of your home.
7. Determine what is causing the excess moisture and eliminate the problem so the black mold does not regrow. You may have to seal the walls with a moisture barrier that you can get from a hardware store. Check all exposed plumbing for leaks, and look around window sills as well.

You can buy commercial cleaners that will clean and disinfect the mold. The bleach works, but use caution when handling the bleach as well. If you are hesitant about the job, ask the advice of a professional mold removal service or get an estimate.
