Smart cards are produced by a different companies. The maker of your smart card will determine how you activate your card, but the process, overall, is similar for each type of smart card. Smart cards contain a microprocessor that enables you to perform data operations (typically used for financial transactions) stored in the card itself.
Instructions
1. Connect your smart card reader to your computer. You can do this via USB port but also via FireWire for some computers.
2. Place your smart card into the reader. This will allow the number programmed into the card as identification to be read by the computer to aid in completing activation.
3. Log on to the manufacturer's website for smart card activation. If you go to the main page of the manufacturer, you should be able to find the link for smart card activation.
4. Follow the link to smart card activation. Once the page is open, different fields need to be entered. First, you will usually need to create a user ID and password.
5. Fill in any other required information. The company may want you to choose questions to verify identity should you ever forget your password as well as your personal information to log the card to you as the owner.
