Build A Digital Microscope

Make your own digital microscope and save money.

Digital microscopes can cost thousands of dollars. However, a useful microscope can be built using readily available parts. This would give you a digital microscope for fun science activities. Using the digital microscope would also allow you to better understand better the way that a digital microscope works -- plus you'll have fun in building one.

Instructions

1. Measure 6¼ inches of PVC pipe and cut it at this length. This will constitute the holder of the eyepiece and the lens. This is the ideal length as this is the normal length of a microscopic lens barrel.

2. Attach the 10-power zoom objective lens to one side of the pipe. This will enable you to magnify an object to your desired size. Fit the lens securely into the pipe and use duct tape as needed to the side to keep the lens in place.

3. Place the eyepiece on the opposite side of the pipe supporting the objective lens. To secure the eyepiece, use of a drill to broaden the opening. Use caution while doing this to ensure that you do not overenlarge the opening. Continue to attempt to secure the eyepiece into the opening until it fits.

4. Use duct tape to hold the eyepiece in the end of the PVC tube.

5. Attach a digital webcam to the microscope at the end holding the eyepiece. Secure this with tape to ensure it will not fall off or move. This will enable you to take pictures of the images you examine with the microscope.
