Calcium chloride is a colorless, odorless chemical compound. It is composed of calcium and chlorine. The nontoxic solution of calcium chloride is used in many industrial applications such as mining, transportation and agriculture. It is available as dry powder, pellets and liquid. Depending on the use of this chemical in industry, different forms have different applications. It is highly water soluble.


Calcium Chloride in Water Treatment


The liquid form of calcium chloride is used in water treatment. Its use in water treatment extends to waste-water treatment, as well as to the treatment of water in swimming pools. It is a nontoxic compound, so adding the compound to water does not pose many problems if some amount remains in the water after treatment.


Waste Water Treatment


The waste water released by many industries, if treated by using calcium chloride, renders this water less toxic so it can harmlessly mix with natural sources of water such as rivers. Calcium chloride treats waste water by removing flocculant impurities. It precipitates other ions such as fluorides (which are usually toxic) into chemically stable nontoxic compounds and thereby neutralizes alkalinity of waste water. Industrial waste water gets cleared of chemical impurities and it can be released safely into waterways.


Water Hardening Treatment








Another important application of calcium chloride is water hardening. It is a preferred water hardening agent because calcium chloride helps maintain the balance of ions in closed water reservoirs such as aquariums.

Calcium chloride is preferred over other elements such as magnesium, barium and strontium because of its safety. Use of calcium chloride is considered an environmentally friendly option in waste-water treatment, with many added benefits. For example, it effectively controls the pH of water to a normal range and even small quantities can be quite effective in decreasing the flocculants. Dispensing this compound into water and monitoring it is easy. And it is a very cost-effective method to save the natural sources of water into which used industrial waste water is released.


Water Treatment in Swimming Pools


The addition of calcium chloride into water increases its hardness. This maintains the balance between various ions present in water. Water with low hardness values is corrosive to metals. Water having controlled hardness is required for proper maintenance of equipment used in swimming pools.
