Lightroom Tutorial Develop

Use Adobe Lightroom to manage your workflow

Adobe Lightroom is an efficient way of cataloging, managing and editing your digital photographs. The "Develop" features of the program are used to correct white balance, set exposure and brightness and generally improve the overall look of your pictures. The system stores the instructions which correct your image and does not directly modify the pixels in the picture which lets you try different approaches without risking permanent damage to the photo.

Instructions

1. Highlight your image in the Library module and select the Develop tab in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Click the "Basic" section in the Develop panel and click the eyedropper tool by "White Balance." Find a part of your image that is supposed to be gray or neutral white and click that part of the screen. Zoom in if necessary to select the neutral area. The overall color balance will be improved. If there are no neutral colors, try selecting a white balance in the drop-down menu that matches the conditions when the picture was taken.

2. Press "Alt" and slide the "Exposure" slider to the right until the first faint signs of white appear on the screen. Those areas will be displayed as pure white in the final image. Press "Alt" again and slide the "Blacks" slider to the right until those parts of the picture that should be pure black appear. Release "Alt" and check your image. Slide the "Fill Light" slider to the right to lighten any dark shadow areas if necessary.

3. Slide the "Brightness" slider left or right to darken or lighten the mid-tones in the picture to improve the overall brightness of the photo. Slide the "Contrast" slider a little to the right to give the picture a little more punch.

4. Most photos benefit from an increase in "Clarity" which selectively increases the contrast between mid-tones in the photo. Zoom to full size by clicking once in the image preview and slide the "Clarity" slider to the right making sure that no unwanted distortions appear. Finally, slide the "Vibrance" slider to the right to selectively increase the color saturation and brilliance of the photo.

5. Press the "Backslash" key to view the original image and release to confirm that your "Develop" settings have significantly improved the photo. Make small adjustments to any of the sliders to get that perfect result.
