Mount My Flash To A Light Stand

A common camera flash.

Using lights mounted separately from your camera is an important step to achieving professional looking, studio photography. If money is tight, or advanced lighting is too bulky, attaching a flash to a light stand can work just as effectively.

Light Stand Mounts

You can buy a variety of different mounts from camera stores, or the Internet, that will allow you to safely attach a flash to light stands. They are often called "light stand to hot shoe" mounts. Using these professional devices is often worth the expense because they allow you the option to add an umbrella, so the light from the flash can be diffused.

Bungees and Clamps

Alternative to specially designed mounts, you can use bungee cords, brackets, or even duct tape to attach a flash to light stands or other surfaces. However, specially designed clamps called "super clamps" (although slightly more expensive than bungees and tape) have a hot shoe adapter that provides you with a much safer option when securing your flash.

Slave Flashes

If you plan to use a flash that's not connected directly to your camera, it must be a slave flash. This means that it needs some kind of device (usually a light sensor or a cable connected to your camera) to detect when you are trying to take your picture. Without such a device, the flash won't activate.
