Set Up A Sb600 Speedlight

To manually control the flash's settings, set the "Mode" to "Manual."

Adding extra light to a scene or subject while taking a picture is the primary purpose of the SB-600 Speedlight external camera flash. Following a few steps will prepare your flash effectively and efficiently. Learn to reset your flash to its default settings before use, install batteries, power your device and set your flash to automatic mode to take pictures.

Instructions

1. Reset all settings for your Speedlight before using for the first time. Press and hold down the "Mode" button (located to the right of the "+" and "-" buttons) and the "Power" button (located on the back panel to the far right) at the same time for two seconds to restore the default settings. This will clear any previous settings the Speedlight my have had.

2. Install batteries by turning the flash on its side and pushing the battery chamber door open with your thumb in the direction of the arrow. Install four AA batteries. Confirm that the polar indicators printed on the inside of the chamber are followed. Replace the batteries if you feel the flash recharge time is getting longer.

3. Turn on the SB-600 by pressing the "Power" button. You should see the "Ready" light (located to the right of the display) illuminate. Press the "Flash" button (located under the "Ready" light and over the "Power" button) to test that the flash is firing.

4. Attach the Speedlight to your camera body. Confirm that both devices are powered down. Twist the mount-lock lever counterclockwise to loosen the flash's mount shoe, slide the flash onto the camera's hot shoe (the flash mount, which should be positioned directly on top of the camera body), and then turn the mount-lock lever clockwise to lock it into place. Grasp the flash head, and tilt it down while holding the "Lock Release" button (located on the right side of the flash's pivot point).

5. Set your flash's mode to "i-TTL Automatic Balanced Fill-Flash" by pushing the "Mode" button, until you cycle to it. The information will appear on the display, letting you know which mode you've chosen. Set the camera's exposure mode to "Auto." This setting is an automatic setting, which allows your flash to automatically expose the picture when the camera and flash are fired.
