Fix An At&T Model 5840 Message Phone

Your AT&T model 5840 message phone has many benefits; however, on occasion you may experience some problems, which can be easily solved. For example, you may not hear a dial tone or hear an unusually long tone when you attempt to make a call. Many times, these types of issues and others can be resolved after the hardware connections are checked and base and handset is re-initialized. This hard-reset restores the phone settings to what they were before things went awry.

Instructions

1. Remove the power cord and reinsert it back into the electrical outlet. If the power source is controlled by a wall switch or a power strip is used, use another electrical outlet.

2. Plug the cord back into the base of the phone and verify that it is secure.

3. Remove the power cord connection from the base of the phone.

4. Turn the phone over, press the small groove on the back cover and then slide it down to open it and expose the battery pack.

5. Remove all battery packs from the handset including the spare in the base of the phone, if available.

6. Wait 30 seconds has passed then reinsert the handset battery pack.

7. Slide the battery pack cover up on the back of the phone until it clicks to indicate that it is locked in place.

8. Reconnect the power cord to the base of the phone. If the phone does not work properly, contact the customer service department at AT&T for service. The link is listed in Resources.
