The world of smartphones got a lot more advanced and competitive in 2008, when Apple released the iPhone 3G--the update to the original iPhone--and Samsung countered with the Instinct.
Memory
One area where the iPhone 3G and the Samsung Instinct differ is in memory. The iPhone 3G has 8GB or 16GB of internal flash memory built into it, while the Samsung Instinct operates on a 2GB MicroSD card, which can expand to 16GB.
Screen
While the iPhone 3G and the Samsung Instinct have touchscreens, they differ slightly in size. The iPhone 3G has a 3 1/2-inch screen compared with the 3.1-inch screen on the Samsung Instinct.
Camera
The iPhone 3G and the Samsung Instinct have a 2-megapixel camera built into them. The Samsung Instinct can shoot video, while the iPhone 3G cannot, as that feature is only available in the iPhone 3GS.
Exclusive Carriers
In the United States, the iPhone 3G is exclusive to AT&T's mobile clients, and the Samsung Instinct is exclusive to Sprint customers.
Price
As of October 2009, the iPhone 3G costs $99 for the 8GB model and $149 for the 16GB model for new AT&T customers and those eligible for upgrades. As of October 2009, Sprint had stopped selling the Samsung Instinct on its website, replacing it with its successor--the Instinct s30, which costs $99.99 after rebates.
