The iPhone 3G added a digital compass and a faster processor to the iPhone line, but it continues to use the proprietary Apple operating system that has many restrictions built in. Unlocking the iPhone 3G removes these restrictions, such as not being able to add a program created by a unsanctioned Apple developer. A number of easy ways to unlock the iPhone 3G are available, none of which require any payment. A computer, wireless home network and Internet connection are the only requirements.
