When replacing the projector in a 50-inch Sony TV set, you are mainly replacing the lamp bulb. This bulb can last for thousands of hours, but prolonged use can shorten its lifespan. The bulb is contained within the assembly in the back of the TV set, and you need to replace it with the same type of bulb. This process can vary depending on the exact model that you have.
Instructions
1. Unplug the TV set and wait at least 30 minutes for all internal components to cool down. If the set was immediately on, wait a few minutes after turning it off before unplugging.
2. Open the door in the back end of the TV set to reach the projector assembly's cover.
3. Unscrew and remove the cover for the projector lamp. Depending on the exact model, this cover may have a single knob to turn -- counterclockwise -- or multiple screws to remove with a screwdriver.
4. Insert a finger in the loop handle on the projector lamp to unlock the bulb and pull the bulb out. Wearing gloves will help protect your hands in case the bulb is still hot.
5. Insert the replacement bulb into the projector assembly while still wearing the gloves; this will prevent you from getting oils on the bulb glass. Make sure the bulb is securely in the assembly.
6. Screw the lamp cover back into place and then close the door on the TV set.
7. Plug the TV set back in and turn it on to confirm the bulb is properly in place. The set will signal if the bulb is not properly installed; this is usually something like the power light flashing multiple times.
