Only unlocked phones using the iDEN standard may be used on Nextel
Unlocked cell phones that employ Motorola's Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) may by used on Nextel. This limits phone selection to devices that are specially designed for iDEN networks, which include Nextel and Boost Mobile in the United States.
Manufacturers
Phones that may be unlocked for use on Nextel are manufactured by Motorola and Research in Motion. As the iDEN standard used by Nextel was designed by Motorola, phone selection is limited.
Carriers
The iDEN phones are offered by Nextel, Boost Mobile and SouthernLINC in the United States. Any unlocked iDEN phone will work on Nextel. Nextel International market phones may be unlocked in countries other than the United States, and Telus Mobility offers devices that may be unlocked to Nextel in the Canadian market.
Designations
Phones that may be unlocked to Nextel include an "i" in the model name, denoting that they run on the iDEN network. Examples include the Motorola i335 and the Research in Motion Blackberry 8350i.
Warning
To properly unlock a phone to Nextel from another carrier, you must have an unlock code to complete the procedure. A Nextel SIM card must also be used so the phone properly connects to the Nextel network.
Misconceptions
Once unlocked, a phone can only be used with Nextel or other iDEN carriers. Although other providers such as AT&T and T-Mobile use SIM cards, the radio frequencies employed for cellular communications differ from those used by Nextel.
