The global system for mobile communications (GSM) is the most popular system for cellular networks. According to GSM World, more than 5 billion GSM mobile phones were being used worldwide in July 2010. If you are trying to locate a single GSM phone out of the billions in the world, it can be a bit of a problem. One solution is to install a global positioning system (GPS) on it. This will allow you to track the phone almost anywhere that it goes.
Instructions
1. Purchase an unlimited data plan for your mobile phone. This will allow you to use your GPS software as much as you like without incurring extra charges. Call your mobile phone service provider for this. As of 2010, these usually cost around $30 per month.
2. Get a GSM mobile that has Internet access. If you don't already have one, you can purchase one at your local mobile phone store or online with your cell phone service provider.
3. Sign up for a mobile phone GPS software program. Several free ones are available. A few that you can use are Amaze GPS, Google Maps for Mobile, and Mologogo (see Resources). Sign up for the service by providing your mobile phone number, a user name, a password, and an email address.
4. Wait for an SMS message with a download link. Go to the "Menu" on your mobile phone and open up the web browser. Go to the link, download the software program and install it.
5. Go to the "Menu" on your phone, and open up the application. A message will appear letting you know that your phone is being tracked. Agree to it by clicking "OK."
6. Go to the website that you registered with, and log on. A map will appear with a dot on it. This is your mobile phone. You can now locate your GSM phone by logging on to the site using any computer or web-enabled device to locate it.
