Learn Digital Photography

Learning digital photography can be fun and easy.

Whether you are seeking a career as a professional photographer or you simply want to become familiar with your new digital camera, there are many different ways of learning digital photography. If you like learning with other people, you may want to take a digital photography class. If you lack the time it takes to take a course in digital photography, you might consider reading a book that explains everything you need to know about digital photography.

Instructions

1. Take a free online digital photography course at the HP Learning Center (see Resources). Choose from one of five courses that teaches you fix common photo problems, print your photos or touch up photos using Adobe Photoshop Elements. The website requires you to register before accessing the free classes.

2. Take a short home study course in digital photography from the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP; see Resources). The course teaches fundamental knowledge that every digital photographer should know, such as working with the shutter speed and aperture settings of your digital camera. Advanced techniques in composition and editing are also covered. The course consists of 16 lessons with color photographs and illustrations, 7 audio CDs, and access to NYIP faculty members. Students who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion.

3. Take a digital photography course through your city's community education department. For a low price, you will learn the basics of digital photography and have the chance to connect with other aspiring photographers. Once you have taken a basic digital photography course, take a class that teaches you more specific skills, such as shooting landscapes or manipulating your images using the computer.

4. Read the book "Digital Photography for Dummies" (see Resources). This introductory guide to photography provides tips and tricks that are useful for beginners as well as those who have some knowledge of basic digital photography. The book is not appropriate for those who already have advanced knowledge of digital photography.

5. Consider joining a local camera club where you can share your photography with others.
