Whether your Harmony 1100 can control your Bose surround system depends on whether the Bose system supports infrared remote technology. Bose systems contain a specific menu entry for IR support, including a command with which you can allow devices like the Harmony 1100 to learn and mimic the functions that are programmed into its remote control.
The Harmony 1100
The Harmony 1100 is a digital universal remote with which you can control all of your entertainment devices at once. With the Harmony 1100, you can create setups, called "activities," that group your devices by type. After you create an activity, you can activate all the devices listed within it with a single button. The Harmony 1100's 3.5-inch screen makes it easy to distinguish one activity from another and access the device's other functions.
Bose Audio
Bose Corporation produces a wide range of audio products, including personal audio systems, home entertainment systems and automotive audio systems. Bose Corporation is a privately held company that conducts ongoing audio research and development. Bose is known for its unconventional speaker designs, such as the 901-model speaker, which uses nine rear-facing drivers. These drivers direct sound backward, toward the wall, to increase the amount of reflected sound delivered by the system.
The Infrared Remote
The Harmony 1100 can only control a device automatically if that device uses an IR remote. Harmony supports over 200,000 devices in this manner, and its manufacturer, Logitech, maintains a database of all of these devices. You can search this database to determine if your particular Bose model is supported. Unfortunately, not all Bose audio systems use IR technology by default. If your Bose system does not, you can usually switch it to a mode that provides support for IR.
Using the Harmony 1100 with a Bose System
If your Harmony 1100 works with your Bose system automatically, you will see it listed when you run the setup wizard included with the 1100's companion utility. If you do not see it, you can activate IR support on most Bose systems by pressing the "System" button on its remote, selecting the "IR Control" option and finally the "Teach" entry. With the Bose in "Teach" mode, return to the Harmony 1100 software and select the "Devices" tab. The Harmony should now detect your Bose device, and you should see a "Learn IR" option. Select this option and follow the on-screen instructions to configure the Harmony to control your Bose device.
