Flash Android 2 2 On The Sprint Epic 4g

The Samsung Galaxy S line of phones includes the Epic 4G on Sprint.

Samsung and Sprint have released the long-awaited software update for the Epic 4G phone as of February 21, 2011. The Google Android operating system received an update from version 2.1, code-named Eclair, to 2.2, code-named Froyo. The update will transmit over the air for download, or you can download it to your computer and then transfer it to your phone via USB cable.

Instructions

1. Press and hold the power button and then select "Power Off" to turn off your phone. Open the back cover of your phone. Slide your thumbnail under the back cover between the chrome strip and the black plastic on the bottom of the phone. Put your fingers on the back of the phone aligned with the camera button then lift up with your thumb while pressing down with your fingers until the bottom of the back plate comes off. Lift up and away from the phone to remove the back cover.

2. Locate the microSD card slot next to the camera lens. Press down with your fingernail until you hear a click and then release and the card will slide up slightly. Gently slide the card out and set it aside in a safe place.

3. Browse to the Samsung software download site on your computer (see Resources). Click the "Software" link and then click the icon under "File" to download the software. The Mac version is listed first as a ZIP file and the Windows version is listed second as an EXE. Wait for the file to download and then double-click on the downloaded file to begin installing. Click "Next" through the install wizard to complete the process.

4. Double click the Samsung "SW Upgrade" icon on the desktop of your computer. Agree with the terms of the upgrade and click "Next." Click "Next" again to acknowledge that you've read the warning. Don't worry, removing your microSD card will preserve your data through the update.

5. Remove the battery from the phone and then replace it to fully clear the phone memory. Hold the "1" key on the phone keyboard and the power button on the side until the display shows a triangle icon for download mode. Plug the micro USB cable into the phone and computer and click "Next" on the computer. Wait for the driver to install and then click "Next" again and unplug the USB cable from the computer.

6. Remove and replace the battery on the phone once again. The display should be blank now. Hold the "1" and power buttons again until you see the download screen, then plug the USB cable into the computer one more time. Click "Next" on the computer and wait for the software to connect with the phone. Click "Next" again then click the "Start Software Download" button. Wait for the download to complete. Your phone will restart.

7. Power off the phone by holding the power button and then taping "Power Off." Wait for the phone to power down completely. Unplug the USB cable from the phone. Slide the microSD card into the slot on the back of the phone and then press down with your fingernail until it clicks into place. Put the back cover on the phone, lining up the holes with the camera lens and flash. Press evenly around the edge of the cover until it clicks into place. Press the power button and release it to restart the phone with Froyo freshly installed.

8. Enter your Google account login information to resync all your contacts and emails. Your photos and music are safely stored on the microSD card and are still intact.
